I need help!
I was wondering if any part of my set-up causes any known problems or if you know what causes it.
I am quite good with computers, but I have a very annoying and baffling problem. When using my computer after a few minutes, the cursor on screen goes all over the place and starts right mouse clicking itself all over the screen, on its own. It happens very erratically, then will all of a sudden lock up. The keyboard locks up as well. The system however isn’t crashed. Information on screen happily flashes and goes about it’s business, as well as downloading or uploading anything it is doing. The only way to gain control of the system is a reset.
The odd thing is, when I have my serial port graphics tablet connected, I can still use that to control the cursor.
I have cleanly installed Windows 98se, on its typical settings. I never set anything unusually, and my system is currently virtually bare from programs except Office 2000 premium. I have installed the latest drivers for all appropriate devices. I have the latest Norton anti virus update and my system is clean, and has never had a virus.
Components I have-
PentiumIII 550Mhz.
Asus P3BF motherboard.
Asus v3400 TNT graphics card AGP 16mb
Videologic Sonic vortex2 Sound card
Promise ata RAID controller fasttrack66 set on AV setup RAID 0 for speed.
Iwill Ultra wide scsi card 2936uw
Rockwell chipset 56kbps modem.
2 x IBM 20.1 Gigabyte 7,200 hard drives ide interface
4 x 128 megabytes of Toshiba RAM
ps2 Acer standard cherry keyboard
ps2 Standard scrolling Microsoft Intelli mouse.
Iomega zip 100 internal
Yamaha cd writer SCSI interface 4x4x16
Philips CD 200 series 2x2x24 ide interface
Running Windows 98 se on typical installation.
Partitioned into 2 five gigabyte and one 30 gig units.

Actually saw a keyboard that caused this same problem with a mouse. Could be that. Try out a different keyboard just to humor me.
On a side note the guy who paints my house described the exact same problem to me today.
Maybe its a new virus, since this is the second time Ive heard of this problem on the same day, and you would think this would be an extremely rare problem.
His symptons were identical to yours, but he wouldnt pay me to troubleshoot it, so I stopped listening.
I mean, he dont paint for free right?

I know exactly what you are talking about! This was happening on both my desktop and my laptop. Now it is just the laptop. It was kind of hard to say exactly when it stopped on the home pc because it happened randomly. The only common factor- between yours and both of mine is Win98 SE.
But here is my theory...I think it is a java or ActiveX bug with all the integration crap of Win98 and IE5. Not only did we take a kick in the pants in performance, but also got the usual browser crashers stuck in the middle of our OS. The only difference I could come up with after I realized it had stopped on my home pc was that I had used a program called 98lite (IE Remove) More about the program at http://www.98lite.net/.
I'm sure you've heard a few people complaining about random reboots out of the blue. That was also happening to me about 3 times a day. I started noting what was going on when this happened. I was always on overloaded (IMO) java and ActiveX sites. This also stopped after I ran the IE Remove program. I don't use my laptop regularly, so I haven't really toyed with it to see if the IE Remove is in fact the savior to this problem. Maybe this will help you. Good luck. |

Heh Trish, is it possible you could test this theory by simply disabling the JIT within Internet Explorer? Sure you couldnt get full use of websites, but it may prove or disprove your idea.
On a side note, I have never actually seen this problem in person, and service many Win98 boxes. I am dying to get my hands on it, since Im hearing about it a whole lot now.
As far as the random reboots go, I have seen that a few times, but each time it was the result of a failing power supply. If this isn't so with your experiences, let me know, since Im bound to have to face it down in the field one day.

Just haven't had a chance to test this out much. Since it is rather random, it will take a little bit of laptop use. I will let you know if I come to a conclusion.
As for the random reboots...they didn't happen on the laptop. Just the wild cursor thing. |
