a couple of weeks ago, after installing some software, the icons on my win95 machines suddenly all sort backwards.

Restore registry, no joy.
Replaced some DLLs written over by installation.
no joy.

What draws the desktop in win 95?????

I know of a similar issue. What software did you install recently before you noticed this problem? So far the only way I know my friend has been able to solve it, is to fix the icons, attempt to shutdown, and when it gets to the shutdown screen where you choose to log off, restart, shutdown, or go to MS-DOS mode, he hit the ESC key. Unfortunately, it fixed the problem in only one of the areas he was having problems with.

I installed some proprietary financial services software. The installation overwrote msvcrt.dll, msvcp60.dll mfc42.dll comctl32.dll and probably other modules. I tried restoring these one-by-one with no joy.

I need to know what draws the darned desktop so I know what to target. No one has been able to tell me, so far.

I have checked Technet and searched the web.

Could your ShellIconCache file possibly be damaged? Here is one of my cleanup routines I run in my autoexec.bat that might be worth a shot.

deltree /y c:\windows\ShellIconCache

Here's some of the reg settings for desktop icons.

Just a little more .ico info:

Have you looked on the software site for any possible bugs? Good luck.

I used tweakIU to rebuild the ShellIconCache file. No joy.

I repaired associations as suggested by another correspondent on a news group, no joy.

I will give your suggestion a try.

I checked with the software supplier to see if any similar problem reports had come in. So far, none.

I have asked several times WHAT DRAWS THE DESKTOP?
No answers so far.
