Every time i have tried to run defrag it tells me to run scandisk and when i try to run scandisk it keeps restarting and after a while tells me that it has restarted ten times and that something is writing to the drive and close my applications and restart scandisk. Problem is there is NOTHING RUNNING i have called for tech support and still it wont finish running. Any help would be greatly valued... Thanks

The reason why its restarting is programes running in the back ground....I defrag in one of 2 ways. you can start up in safe mode and run defrag then when done restart or when defrag starts left click on the start button to bring up menu and leave like that till defrag is done... I got these 2 tricks off of TECH TV, Bob

Once you get scandisk & defrag going in either Safe Mode or DOS , try ME defrag .

There are many fixes for W95/98 defrag , but the best is to install
Windows ME defrag , very fast . Because I have very little running
at start up , I do'nt need to close anything down to run defrag .
Get it from here .

W9X-Me-Defrag
http://members.home.net/scotterpops/enhancements/enhancements9c.html
http://surecool.com/download.htm

Download it right into your Windows directory. Rename your
current version of DEFRAG.EXE to DEFRAG.OLD, then rename
winme_DEFRAG.EXE to DEFRAG.EXE ( or whatever the old defrag
was named )

=======================================================================

Also , to make W98 Defrag even Faster for it's 1st run , from
Explorer , Delete all the files ( except the read only file )
in Windows / Applog .
Taskmon will rebuild the Applog file .

=======================================================================

To put the defrag in it's correct place .
Open Windows explorer , go down to Windows , left click on the yellow
folder , this opens the right hand panel .
Scroll down to defrag & write down the exact name . Next , right
click on defrag , scroll down to rename & click on it . Now left
click at the end of defrag & add the word old . So if you had the
word defrag , it now becomes defragold .
Now rename MEdefrag to whatever you wrote down , drag & drop it on
the yellow Windows folder or anywhere in the right hand side .
Both achive the same thing & Windows will after you close , put it
alphabetically . That's it , John .

Thanks guys but after 10 hours of running scandisk it still wont finish running and has to restart. I have ME running on this system so the only thing i can think is that i have a bad harddrive.

no me sucks. i find that me has problems with safe mode as it it even has some problems exiting programs through control alt delete. What you have to do is go to start>run>msconfig then select diagnostic setup and then ok. then let it restart and make sure you press 1 for normal while it is restarting. and start>run>command then on the dos command prompt type in scandisk. then unplug your internet connection( this is optional) and then click thourall and automatially fix errors. let this run it will take about an hour or two or probably longer. it will check folders and then allocation tables. it should work but if it restarts even once you might as well restart and press what ever number is command prompt. then type in scandisk. you could also use a boot disk to run a thourall scandisk. the reason you are having these problems is because something is actually righting to your windows program but you can not see it. ME is horrible for this kind of thing. what i would do if i was you... and all the steps i told you did not work, research the stopping of the righting cause there is a registry you can use to eliminate it. You can even hit control alt delete and close everthing you see except explorer and systray. these are what is allowing you computer to operate. personally i think you should reformat your hard drive and bye xp proffesional. it is worth it. or even 98 is better. make sure all your cookies and are deleted and temporary internet files cause running cleanup on me wont get rid of them all.
if all of this doesn't work then tell me your hardrive is bad...

remember.. microsoft built ME as a marketing strategy for the turn of the millineum so it was very rushed and carelessly done. It was never built to be a Good operating system in fact it was the worst operating system ever made.

ok i have your solution. go to start>run>msconfig>diagnostic startup> ok reboot..

press the number for command prompt only. then when this is loaded type in scandisk/all/surface let it run. it will take a very long time but it is the most efficient way. When you have finished it respond to this and tell me what you see.
