Can anyone help me ? I have discovered my partner was downloading very duty porn ( and I'm pretty broadmindeD!!!) He has now served an eviction notice on me and my four young children as its his house. His old computer is here, obviously he has deleted cookies, temp internet files etc. But is there anyway that information will still be on the dat.index file and if so how can I open it ? Please help me.

Sorry for the typing errors, in the first message, Its shocking to find out your partner is a total perv, and then that he can try to evict you within days of finding out.... I meant to say very heavy duty porn in the original message.I Have changed the locks, but I am scared of what will happen next to us'Brenda

I am sure I am not alone when I say that I am sorry about your situation.
However, this sounds like more of an issue for your police department. If your "partner" is a threat to you, I would worry less about trying to extract information from his system (which could be illegal - private propery) and more about getting away from the situation.

Extracting information from a hard drive might be possible, but if this is not your computer, you could be breaking the law by accessing it without his permission. And if you were to discover some information, what then ? You performed an unlawful search.

If this man were to discover your plan, his hard drive could very easily disappear without a trace. Then you'd be left with nothing but an angry ex-partner to contend with.

Just my opinion, but - take care of yourself and your children before trying to nail this guy with porn. He may not be a very nice person, but is it worth putting yourself and your children at risk ?

Good luck.

I agree with Matt on this issue, don't mess around with the computer, call the police and protect your children and yourself first.

Thanks guys, have already been to the police, they say unless I have proof that it is child porn they can't get a warrent to access either his work computer or the computer at home, which they say I can try to access because he gave it to the children so technically it is ours. WIth regard to trying to get away from him, I am trying every thing I can to do that, but with four children in school, aged between 4 and 15 it is not going to be easy. Resources in rural Ireland for help for families in trouble are fairly limited. I Still think it is worth trying to access the dat index files.... any ideas...please. Thanks Matt and E.S for your concern, I feel less alone even though you are both in the states.

Check his cookies/cache/if he has pictures/movies hidden somewhere they will be either .MPG or .jpg or even .gif type files search files and folders for these types. He may have disguised them as newsgroup files as well. One of the most common Group folders is XNEWS, and you may need a password to open the folder, not to berate men, but we do like to keep things simple so the password might be something common and simple like dog's name, birthdate, mothers name, etc. Hope this helps.

Thank's E.S., I have already looked for .jpg, bitmaps and mpg files, but he scrubbed the computer of most stuff anyway when he gave it to the kids. Any of the file names that I don't recognise as being part of the operating system, I can't open, or else I get a load of gobbledygook in notepad. So I am back to the Dat Index file. Perhaps you could give me some info though. What is stored on a dat index file ? Even if I did access it would I find anything usable on it ? It's not that I want to get this guy into trouble and if it's normal adult porn it's not as if I am going to be shocked, but I am really concerned that I have possibly exposed my children to someone much more sinister. The younger kids are due to be assessed by social workers and I am desperately hoping that he hasn't done anything. Getting into the dat index file would give me some idea of just who I have been living with. Thanks for your support !!!

If he went into the registry and cleaned it up there isn't much that you can see or find on the computer. I hope for your sake and your childrens sake that all is O.K. after the assessment, be thankful the loser is gone so you can get on with getting on.

Thanks E.S !!! Will try and get corel/word perfect and see what's there, even from the point of view of my older kids messing around on that computer in case they inadvertently came across something. Thanks again for your help and support. Bren.

Here is the software the police departments use ... it is very comprehensive ... don't know how much it costs ... but if you took the computer in they could scan it ... maybe ...
