Immediately after replacimg the black ink cartridge in a Xerox XK50cx multifuction inkjet it gave the error message "all carts. empty" even though both were full. Changing cartidges, changing electrical outlets, and powering down and up have all been tried and failed.
Any suggeations for correcting this problem would be appreciated.

Some inkjet printers I.E. Canon and perhaps Xerox have a cleanout/overflo tank that fills up with excess ink during printing generally the tank itself can cause an issue similar to what you are experiencing but it could just be a clogged head as well.
Try running the cleanup utility if the software will let you otherwise you may have to take it in to a Xerox authorized service center.
