I bought an HP 6330 in January and have had two motherboards and a new CD ROM yet it still will not even complete a format and recovery without fatal errors etc. Tech support on both the telephone and web sites have been less than helpful. I have flashed the BIOS, done and F-disk and reformat and tried loading win98 from a different source, nothing works. Any thoughts on something I may have missed that I could try? I am about to be given another HP with the same issues by a too-frustrated-to-try-anymore friend. So any advice I will try on both to see what happens.

Don't know the model, but I had a friend who also had grief wwith an HP. He tried to install a fresh version of Windows and found he was getting all sorts of errors. Found that the only way he could get Win95 functional was to use the HP startup CD that came with the machine as it installs and loads all the intergrated and proprietrary peripheals as part of the setup. Very frustrating...but a basic OS was better than a 16 colour, soundless, unconnected one. Furthermore, he was informed that if he wanted to upgrade to 98 he had to BUY an HP Win98 startup CD for his computer. Hope I haven't made you feel too bad about your purchase....good luck with it.

Problem with that is the recovery CD that came with the computer seems to BE the problem. According to one post there are corrupt files in it that are causing my problems. I seem to be stuck in a catch-22 can't install other OS and the one I have is corrupted, Any other ideas?

Is it a new machine still under warranty?
If so, do Lemon Laws apply in your state?
Under the lemon laws, if they have tried multiple times to repair a problem and are unsuccessful then you are entitled to a new replacement.

Good point, any idea how to find out if they apply in my state? Also who would be the enforcement arm for "convincing" HP they need to replace this?

Actually I've only been in the US a little over a year, and have never had to use the law myself, though I have heard plenty about it.
I have no idea what the organization would be called but I am sure there is some sort of Comsumer Protection Agency.

Writing a letter to the head of the repair department would probably help, or to the regional manager. You should be able to find contact info on the HP home page.
