For some reason the Magnify utility in Win98 has stopped working on me.
It brings up the requester asking what zoom level I want, but does not show the magnified area.

Any ideas?

Well, still no news on this problem.
I have been using Microsoft's web response support to try to get this sorted out, but have had no luck with their suggestions so far.

I could use their phone support, but I just don't have time to wait on hold forever. I'm in no great rush for it to work, but it would be nice if I could use it again someday.

have you tried reinstalling it? before you try to run the patch for it from the web site, check what version mshtml.dll and msaa*.dll in windows\system. if the second one's there, then you might be able to install the maaupd patch to correct these versions to newer ones. then run the maa.. patch. if you install ie5; some of the updates, i believe, will remove this msaa*.dll file as it's no longer needed. then run the accessibility patch. this must be done in a certain order, or forget it, you'll have to reinstall. some things may not work or you will get illegal operation errors. too much trouble to try manually. too much stuff needs to be changed your os is history. believe me, i went this route. learned the hard way.

I've also installed Win98SE since the problem started, but that didn't fix it.

Yep, tried reinstalling it and have the same problem.
I thought possibly I have have somehow inadvertantly dragged it off into somewhere beyond the visible screen area (sometimes that used to be a problem with Win 3.x programs) but I cannot see anywhere in the registry or ini files where it keeps the screen location.
It may have been due to either the installation of a new video card (Quantum3D Raven, voodoo banshee based), reinstallation of Direct X 6.1 or something else.
I've tried to work it out for a few weeks and had no luck. I'll try your other suggestion though.

i don't use it, so i'm not sure exactly what problems you are having. soooo, go to the ms knowledge base, and click "search". then type "win98 and magnifier"; this being boolean, in the search box. then direct the search to "knowledge base" only. not the whole ms site. this should give you two pages of items to look through. if you try the "all of ms" option, you'll get the msdn articles, which are probably not good for anything but dev info. no troubleshooting. only two pages there, too. see if anything relates to your issue. post back, please, as i'm curious, too.

I've tried a few other things, but still no go.
I was going to try what you said about the accessibility update, but Win98 SE includes all those updates with it.
Same goes for re-installing DirectX. 98SE actually includes a later DirectX (6.1a), so I can't do that either.

I think I am stuck.

Thankfully I barely ever use it, but sometimes I find it handy.
