I read in "PRactical WINDOWS" magazine that some people might think about saving Windows .cab files to their HD from the Windows CD if they do a lot of ADD/REMOVE of Windows components. I do a lot of ADD/Remove, and I never had to insert the Windows CD. It must already access .cab files from my HD. How do I find this out and is there any way to remove the .cab files safely from my HD and have it ask for the windows cd when I add/remove stuff? |

i do use the cab files on my third harddrive. it's useful only because if the computer doesn't work properly and can't access the cd-rom, then i just point it to the cab folder i created. there is a registry setting to change where it looks for the default cabs, rather than the cd. i forget which one it is. i'd have to go through it to find it. |

Here is the Registry key, or search for the string "SourcePath": HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\SETUP - SOURCEPATH |

Or you can use the find engine to search for *.cab What I like to do is, after formatting the hard disk, I will copy all the file(including CAB file) from Win98 directory in CD-Rom into c:\win98 directory and run setup from that directory. When I add/remove program, the system will automatically locate the CAB files. |
