I installed an icon management program that made all ico extensions to associate themselves with the program. I have since removed the program from my system, but the association is still there. How can I re-associate the ico extension to what it was when I got the computer. I run Win98.
I added a folder with a bunch of icons in it and next to each icon there was a small image preview of the icon. Now I only get a generic Windows picture.
Thanks

install tweakui that's on the win 98 cd-rom. there's a button there to "restore factory settings". first choose the icons, then click it.

Win,

Thanks,
I installed Tweakui, but I don't want to reset the entire system back, just the *.ico file extension.
When I opened a file folder in Explorer with my own icon files, I use to be able to see a small image of what the icon looks like. That is what I want to do again.
Can you just see what you file association is for ico files in the folder options?

sorry it took so long to answer. i had a harddrive failure and it wiped three drives. anyway, i'm back up and running again. if you look toward one of the last pages in tweakui, you'll find an option to restore factory settings. there's a box you can click on and it will expand to show more options to restore. in it, you'll find the icons. once you click it, then click the restore button, it'll do it's thing.

hope this helps.

Thanks, I rebuilt the file associations in TWEAKUI, But it didn't really do anything.

Could you check your file types settings under "View", "File Types" for ICO or ICONS and tell me what the association is?
Like I posted before, I added AXI-Icon to my computer and it took over all file associations for icons.when I uninstalled that program, all icons associates refer to 'axi-icon.exe %1' or something in the registry and my norton win doctor keeps finding that association even after I repair it with "delete the registry entry".

This is really bugging me! I am sort of a clutter freak.

the icons in the file types are not linked to anything. content type MIME is "image/x-icon", the default extension is ".ico".

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ico default value "icofile"
content type "image/x-icon
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/x-icon CLSID "25336920-03F9-11cf-8FD0-00AA00686F13"
extension ".ico"
image filter CLSID "607fd4e8-0a03-11d1-ab1d-00c04fc9b304"

these are two of the registry entries. look under the clsid code for where it is in the "MIME" entry.

see if any of these match. or does the .ico point to another program to use.

hope this helps.

Please HELP!
I want to install "tweakui" but I don't have a regular win98 disc, just the recovery one as Win98 was already installed on my computer when I got it. How can I access my win98 disc on my computer?
