Can you reinstall Win98 or NT right over the one that is already running when things seem to get too corrupted without having to format the hard drive first?
I was wondering if this was possible in case that I ever need to reinstall any drivers or anything else in the operating system.

Thanks

yes you can reinstall windows 98 overtop but when you do it doesn't overwrite the windows system files. So if it is a driver problem this won't fix it. Most of your registry settings will also remain untouched. Now this is only if you reinstall windows98 from windows98. If you reinstall it from dos it will overwrite more things but you'll probably get the same results only it would take longer. It's better to find the source of the problem and then deal with it from there.

win98 will let you install over itself. not sure about nt. although you just might lose data, as well as registry settings. if you ever had to reinstall drivers, try to first uninstall the drivers, then reinstall them. on some software and hardware, the only way to reinstall them is to delete all files pertaining to them after uninstalling them. then go into the registry and delete settings for the device except if it's a questionable sharing of settings there. such as if you have two devices of the same manufacturer, software included in this. then it might be a nightmare unles you just delete everything pertaininng to the make. that means you have to uninstall two or more and reinstall them in the above manner just to get the original one reinstalled. THEN reboot. don't reboot until you're sure you got everything. otherwise win98 will detect a corrupt registry and restore the previous backup. then, it will really be a nightmare.

have i got you confused, yet? it took me a lot of reinstalls to figure it out. what a hassle, but sometimes necessary.
