When installing new hardware by USB, I have had problems because some background tasks seem to disrupt the process.
Can anyone suggest a minimum list (or where to find a list) of which tasks need to be left running for W98 to operate while things like USB devices are to be installed?

The only program you need running (like when you press ctrl+alt+del) is Explorer. I hope this solved your problem. :-)
