Did you have Nuts and Bolts installed at one time and have removed it, perchance? If so, this is your problem. N&B patches win.com with it's own scanning software, but uninstalling "forgets" to remove it. The patch was originally on the Helix software/Macafee site but I'm not sure if it is now. Have a search for it.

Here is something to try. Sorry about the long post but if it fixes your problem then it's worth it. I'm taking a guess that your running windows 95. Boot off of a boot disk that has cdrom support then check for the following files:
-windows\scandisk.exe
-windows\system\dskmaint.dll
-windows\command\scandisk.exe
Make sure all three are there. If one is missing then just replace that one. If they are all there or if replacing just the one doesn't work then replace all three. Here's how.
If you have windows95 osr2 (check for a date on the cd. If it says from 1981-1996 or later the it's osr2) then here's how to replace each file.
with your windows cd in the drive
make sure your at the c: prompt. then type "cd windows". after you get to this point then type the following pressing enter after each line:
ren scandskw.exe *.bak
ren system\dskmaint.dll
ren command\scandisk.exe *.bak
this will rename the files. now here's how to put them back.
type the following: (they are one line a piece)
extract :\win95_16.cab scandskw.exe /L %windir%
extract :\win95\precopy2.cab dskmaint.dll /L %windir%\system
copy :\win95\scandisk.exe %windir%\command]
= The drive letter your cdrom is on.
now reboot and see if it works.
Now lets say you have osr1 of windows or it's the win95 upgrade.
you rename the files the same as you do above but the extracting from the win95 cd is a little different.
To extract the files type the following at c:\windows
extract :\win95\win95_09.cab scandskw.exe /l %windir%
extract :\win95\precopy2.cab dskmaint.dll /l %windir%\system
copy :\win95\scandisk.exe %windir%\command
where again is equal to the drive letter of your cdrom. If you have any questions or problems leave a message or you can e-mail me. Also if you upgraded using the floppy disk for win95 I've got the fix for that also. |

What you failed to mention was are you running
Win95 or 98.
Also which 486X ????, with or without a co-processor.
In win98 you can run "SFC", you can check if "scandisk"
in in your win98 command folder and replace it if it isnt.
you can use your emergency boot disk with win95 or win98
that'll get you to win/dos.
It should have a scandisk.exe on it or in win98 you
can restore your registry from win/dos |

My guess is you won't be able to boot into safe mode either (I'm hitting a blank on how to do it, its been so long since I've had to). You're probably going to have to format your HDD. It'll be a complete pain, especially if you haven't done it often, but you'll see a nice performance increase overall.
After you get everything reinstalled goto Run in the start menuu and type MSconfig. Then in the General tab choose advanced, and then check disable scandisk after bad shutdown. This way you'll always be able to boot no matter what for the most part. You should always run scandisk about once a weak, and a full surface scan every 2 weeks or a month. Defragment right after you run the full surface scan every time. This should keep everything running nicely. Also, find a nice utility to clean out the registry for you. I use a Linux like one thats really complicated so I'm not going to suggest it. |

Use a boot disk to boot up your computer, and run
scandisk from the a: prompt. Do a thorough scan on
your c: drive. My guess is that you will find multiple
clusters gone bad. This is probably what caused your
improper shutdown in the first place. Chances are very
good that the hard drive is shot. If you find bad
spots, fix them and then save your valuable data if
you have time to before the next (inevitable) crash. Another
alternative is a virus, in which case you will probably
have to do a format as per the previous post...
