I recently inherited 3 Orchid Fahrenheit VA video/sound
combo cards from the company where I work. The video
works fine, but the sound won't work in 95 or 3.1.
Orchid's site has no sound drivers for this card, and
the manufacturer of the sound chip (OKI6388) is no help
either. Anybody got one of these cards and/or know the
proper drivers/jumper settings? I have one with an ESS488
sound chip that works fine in 95 with the detected driver. |

Dave, Check out the picture below. If this is the same card, let me know & I have more info on it. According to the Micro House I/O library, there is no sound, but there is a microphone and speaker jack and some jumper settings for voice annotation interrupts. Doesn't make much sense to me, but if it is the same card, Fahrenheit VA, then I can at least give you what I have. Let me know.

Sure looks like the ones I have. The parts that are
shown are all in the correct spots. The strange thing
is that the other VA card I have (with the ESS 488
chip in place of the OKI) matches that drawing as
well, and I have the sound and video working fine
in a machine now. Perhaps the later (ESS) cards had
full fledged sound while the earlier cards had some
sort of partial sound? Very odd. In any case, any
light you could shed would be great, I'm about out
of ideas on this one. I've looked the Micro House
thing over briefly; do you recommend it? |

Ok, The Micro House library I have is not the complete one. It came with with the Upgrading & Repairing PCs book, but I have still found a decent amount of info in it that I couldn't find elsewhere. I recommended the full version not too long ago to someone, if they were up for the money. He hesitated a little, but then ended up doing it and e-mailed me saying it was the best thing he had ever done and the $200/$300 was well spent. I know Phil Croucher (BIOS Companion) is getting ready to come out with a new 2 CD Tech library aiming at the Micro House audience. I believe it is going to be $49.
Anyway...They don't make it easy to copy info, so I made a gif from a screenshot. So check the link below for the specs that I have. There was no listing for this card with an ESS chipset. Wierd, I've never seen a video card with sound jacks, that the specs say it is just a video card. hmmm...Well, hope this helps.

Thanks for the info; I downloaded the 7-day trial
version from Micro House, it contains the same data
that you supplied. My guess is that these simply
are not true sound cards, but that one with the ess488
is still puzzling. The software is quite good, though
far from complete, and a bit pricey. If fixing up
older computers was more than a hobby for me, it would
probably pay for itself quite quickly. |
