I purchased a MSI 6163 motherboard to replace my ABIT BH6. The problem is when I try to install the OS(Win98) the system locks. The BIOS is flashed and I'm not overclocking my CPU (p3450). I have tried the install with\without peripherals, all\some of my RAM. I gave up after trying quite a few times. I put my BH6 back in the case and I installed win98 and win2K without a pause. Any suggestions? thanks.

Sounds like an IDE problem to me. Play around with all of the cables first in case it was just a simple mistake. Also make sure all the HDD and CD-ROM settings are right in the BIOS. If I recall correctly, that motherboard has voltage adjustments doesn't it? Make sure that they aren't set too high, and play around with things like high/low signal. Also make sure all the jumpers are shortig the right pins, especially CCMOS1 (or the MSI equivolent), FSB speed, and multiplier.

sorry if I gave too basic of advice to start off, but you gave me no idea of what you tried. I'll tell you though, its not a peripheral problem beyond the possibilty of a cable mistake. Its almost definitely a BIOS or CMOS problem, and after an Abit board it can get really frustrating dealing with all the jumpers again. Just stick with it and you'll figure it all out soon enough.

To be honest with you, I would have stuck with the BH6 if I were you and pushed the P3 up to 558 or 601.
