My DEC Starion 500i has started to act up.
When I power it up, it does not appear to boot.
However, when I unplug the keyboard, it begins
a boot sequence, then reports a keyboard error as
it should. It then asks for F1 to continue, F2 to
go to setup. When I plug the keyboard back in, the
keyboard is dead.
I have tried other PS2-connector keyboards, as well
as AT keyboards which connect through an adapter
plug. Same results each time --- no boot if the
keyboard is plugged in (i.e. screen stays black),
but when the keyboard is disconnected, the thing
boots as far as it ca, but stops because of the
keyboard error.
The motherboard uses an 82C42PE pre-programmed
UPI microcontroller to interface with the keyboard.
Short of trying to replace this chip (which is
square package, top-soldered to the motherboard),
can anyone provide any guidance with respect to
testing the data stream out of the 82C42PE so that
I can tell whether it is the problem?

I have no idea about your particular problem, but perhaps you may be able to help with my problem below yours on the message board.
If you have the manual for your machine perhaps you could take a few moments to look up the error I am getting. I would really appreciate it.

I just picked up a Digital Starion 500i machine, but on boot I noticed it gives the following errors:
ACFG Error: 8603FFFF
ACFG Error: 8603FFFF
(it is repeated twice).
It does not appear to effect the operation of the machine but I would like to know how to stop them. |

I had a keyboard problem that I solved by installing a Logitech wireless keyboard. It would take 2 or 3 boots to get the key board to keep or start working. The most irritating thing about it was that my mouse also died when the keyboard stopped working and I had to shut down the computer by turning the power off. This made start up time consuming as XP checked the disk before booting. I was able to solve the dead mouse problem by using a USB mouse. I got the wireless keyboard which stopped the rebooting nuisance. I had the USB mouse and got a refurbished wireless key board which included a wireless mouse for $30. Let me know if this helped. |

the ACFG Error: 8603FFFF is related to your pci bus controller not being able to initialize/configure a connected device during POST. I get the error all the time (about 8-9 rows of it) on a computer of mine. It just cant configure the video card but it works fine. In case you want to know, the computer is a ZEOS Pantera Pentium 90Mhz w/CoralMAX motherboard and S3 Viper3D video. |
