I just bought a "Best Data 56k internal data fax modem for windows 95,98", but i can't seem to get it to work with dos applications, any suggestions?

P.S. ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER & MODEM DURING A THUNDERSTORM. (Storm blew out my motherboard and modem)
:(

Chances are you have purchased a win modem, if this is the case there is no way to get dos applications to work with it as far as I know.

You need a normal modem for running dos application with a modem...

PS: Anyone know if there is anyway at all to run a ATA drive on a IDE System?

Thanks.
Simon.

You're absolutely right. A "winmodem" is exactly
what it sounds like. It will run only under a Win9x
environment. It is essentially a phone jack on an
expansion card. My advice is: don't buy one. You are
flirting with hardware hell. As for ATA on an IDE
system, the two standards are fully compatible. If your
motherboard (or controller card) won't support ATA,
the drive will revert to an earlier (slower) standard.
You may have to use a disk utility to get the mother-
board to recognize drives larger than 500Mb (or 2Gb,
or 8Gb), but trust me: any ATA drive will work with
any PC that is 80386 or better, assuming you are
using an IDE controller, whether on board or embedded.

So just a quick Question, Can I put the ATA HDD on the SAme IDE chain as my IDE HDD it's a 500mb drive this is only going into a 80486dx266

Thanks..
Simon.

Sure. Keep in mind though, that the slave in a chain
will only transfer data as fast as the master drive's
best possible speed. So if you have a speedy new 6
Gb drive following a tired old 500 Mb, you are not
going to be taking advantage of the (considerable)
performance gain you would see if you made the new
drive the C: . Of course this means that you will
have to reinstall your operating system, but the
reward is dramatic speed boost.

Hmmm... Wish i had known it was a winmodem before i bought it. I'm not exactly sure i want to take it back though. It's the only one of 6 modems to actually work on this computer.
