Have just bought a new motherboard (Gigabyte GA-8KNXP) and a P4 3Ghz 800fsb CPU. Having fully extended (90 degrees) the CPU socket arm on the motherboard the P4 CPU does not sit flat. Three sides of the CPU pins seem to locate fine but one side does not. The pins on the CPU were perfect when I tried to install and the CPU was polarised correctly. Clearly, I am going to exchange the motherboard but I wanted to know whether other people have heard of faulty motherboard CPU sockets or does it never happen? Another question; in gently trying to locate the CPU in the socket correctly, some of the CPU's pins seem to have gone "shiny" on their tips and very slightly (almost imperceptibly) bent, implying that there is something blocking their smooth location into the socket. Will slightly "shiny" ends to the CPU pins that have been very slightly bent affect the actual usage of the CPU?

Will slightly "shiny" ends to the CPU pins that have been very slightly bent affect the actual usage of the CPU? Usually not as long as the pins in question still maintain the ability to be inserted into a properly aligned socket. As for the GA8KNXP board and faulty socket, it's not the first nor will it be the last. |
