I am using Windows 98. When i goto some websites and try to stream or download media I get an error that another device is using my sound card, or sometimes it brings up the real player window and appears to open the file but I get no sound from it as it appears to play. I'm trying to hear streaming mp3 files and rm files but neither will work on this site.

Ive tried using cntrl-alt-dlt to close any open programs and I even try rebooting and going directly to the site to get the sound but nothing works. I have noticed that the site has flash on it (does flash tie up your sound card?)
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

It's more than likely a codec missing that is required to play the audio files. Sometimes codecs will get lost in the jumble of other items being called upon to perform different tasks. Other than the streams not functioning properly does your sound work when playing CD's or Windows sounds?

Finding a missing codec is easy, Download and install GSPOT codec information appliance open the stream in the media player of your choice than launch GSPOT, it will monitor the type of file and extensions and give you some insight as to what is missing to play the video and/or sound properly.

Windows notification sounds are wave files or files with .wav for extensions probably not related to Realplayer as most files use a codec specific to Realplayer.
For the wave files make sure you have a complete list in device manager for your sound card setup. It would be helpful to know which sound card drivers are installed.

There are alot of sound cards available anywhere from the super cheap AC97 type that use more CPU cycles to produce sound all the way up to high end cards costing several hundred if not a thousand dollars.
The best card for your rig would be determined by two things. 1 the type of system you have
and 2 what it is used for.

Get a Creative Live card or Audigy, disable the onboard audio if you haven't already. You won't be disappointed.

Make sure the Windows Audio Service is started. In Win98 it should be in msconfig utiltiy or in the services.msc.

I am using an eMachines comp, WinXP with AC97 and I have no sound at all, it shows I have installed the drivers but when I check the audio controls it says "No Audio Device". I have downloaded the newest Via Tech Drivers but still no sound. I dont have a sound card, it connects straight to the motherboard. Do I need to check the Bios or something? Please help, thanks.

Hi! I've Acer Travelmate 4601WLMi laptop and recently I was installing a software called 'Sound Taxi' when suddenly the Windows Blue (crash) screen appeared. After that my sound device driver is not working and after repeated re-installation of the sound drivers for my "Conexant AC-Link Audio" has proved to be futile. My system's Ddevice Manager shows that the sound drivers are workin fine, however I can't see the Volume control in the task bar and also whenever I try plaing audio files then a windows error is displayed as "a device id has been used that is out of range for your system".

Kindly advice as I don't want to format or re-install windows, due to the delicate nature of my data stored on the computer.

System Config:
Intel Pentium M 730
Intel 915PM
ATI Mobility Radeon X700 (64MB)
768MB DDR2 RAM (512 + 256)

SOLUTION FOR MAC OS X

Anyone experiencing the "Cannot open audio device. Another Application may be using it" can follow this solution for a fix, while using OS X. The problem occurs when other audio applications change the audio settings.

1. Open your applications folder
2. Open the ultilities folder
3. Open "Audio MIDI Setup"
4. Select "Built-in Output" (next to "Properites For:")
5. Change the format to 44100.0 Hz

Another fix is to open Garageband (which resets the settings), then restart your computer.

My Creative SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum card doesn't work! I recieved a message that it crashed... but the support link doesn't help. It said to run:%userprofile%... find some files... delete some... go to the creative site... download some updated software...etc.
Problem is: I couldn't find the folder with the files to remove and ultimately decided to do a full restore of my system to factory state, in the hopes I could reinstall everything. I even removed the SoundBlaster Card and replaced it... my computer did produce sound for about 5 minutes, but then nothing again!
Please help. I am clueless on where to go from here. Do you know about these SoundBlaster Cards? Your help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Josh
