I just got this Gateway 400 from my dad, who got it for free because it won't work. It has a Jabil BX Motherboard w/ Integrated Audio R2 and a 400 MHz Pentium II With 512K L2 Cache (slot). When ever I power it on, I get no post tones nor any video. I've tried a pci video card but still no video or post tones, I've removed all the memory and cards and still no post tones.... Anyone have any Idea's as to what to do. If it's the processor does anyone have specs on the motherboard. I was looking at a PII Xeon 400 or 450 for only $9 and was wondering if it would work, if thats the problem |

I don't think the Xeon will work with the Gateway, It was relegated for use in servers. The maximum CPU supported by the BIOS might be a 450MHZ Pentium 2. I did read on a couple of forums that some are running at 533mhz with a celeron and slocket adaptor but with diminished returns on the performance. As far as the CPU being bad, probably, as the Gateway's very often used passive cooling on the CPU with a vent shroud. If you have this type chances are pretty good the CPU just burned out from heat and the mainboard is probably o.k. If the mainboard looks o.k. appearance wise take a closer look near the Slot the CPU is in and look for swollen and bulging tops of capacitors (they look like small tin cans wrapped in plastic)this would indicate voltage problems caused by dried out leaking components which would certainly point to a bad board. |
