I have acquired a Macintosh Quadra 840AV from a friend who got it in his church's donation bin. On boot-up, the wallzapper screen-saver asks for a password in order to wake up the machine. Can this be circumvented? I've never used a Mac before, so any suggestions are appreciated. |

I held down the shift key to bypass the After Dark on boot-up. ... now if only I can figure out how to delete the After Dark preferences file :P ... golly, I have no idea how to navigate around this thing! or how to find out the most basic information about it. Anyway, I found many useful and interesting links elsewhere in this forum, so I think I can manage.

well when you hold down the shift key on boot up on a mac you force it in what wintel ppl call "safe mode" you bypass all the plug ins(drivers), control panels, and preferences. because of this you should be able to navigate the file system. double click on the icon that looks like a drive(it should be at the top right hand corner of the display, it should be labeled something like macintosh hard or drive macintosh hdd or something else) then look for a folder labeled system(it should have a little mac smiley face on it)the look for a folder labeled preferences. click and hold the mouse button down and drag it to the trash can icon on the desktop(when the trash changes colors) let go of the mouse button. then restart the machine and you should be to do what ever you harts content with it(all though it will not be much) i hope this helps...
