The other day I was looking around in my PC, trying to find out various things about my motherboard, processor, and various other pieces of hardware. I wasn''t touching or moving anything around. I wanted to see what kind of processor slot i had, so i tried to remove the fan, and it wouldn't come off, so i tried again, but i think i tried a little to hard, cause i eventually gave up and went to boot my pc and the aforementioned problems started (except for the error message). so i went back in, and actually got the fan off, undid the clippy and took out the processor, which had one slightly bent pin, and there was some dust in the socket (socket 478 i now know) and when i put it all back in and when i went to boot, it did all the same nonsense, except now there is the error message about the cpu and/or fan.

in case anyone wants to know, there is no evidence of "scoring, scorching, burning, or melting" on the cpu.

if anyone could help, i'd be more than elated. if the problem would be fixed with a new processor, that's no big deal, i planned on getting a new one anyway.

however, if i take the processor out completely, the computer doesn't boot at all (obviously) so i am not sure if something is wrong with my cpu or my motherboard.

i'm not sure what kind of motherboard i have, it's just a compaq one...i had a pentium 4 1.5gHz 400fbs processor....i was wondering if a 2.4gHz 800fbs processor would work in it's stead?

any help would, again, be much appreciated.

The Compaq will only run 400FSB P4's probably to 2.4 GHz. You should consider having the system tested before making a decision on getting a new CPU.

i would just replace the heatsink/fan and be done with it... IMO compaqs are not worth the trouble to do major upgrades to unless you can fit a new
motherboard in it, then you could get the better processor. you will have to get the proper memory that will work with the cpu fsb as well.

What was the afore mentioned problem again?
And why were you 'finding things out' by pulling the fan off your processor?...
I'd find a new 2.X P4 and be done with it...
And you should probably have someone else pick it out and install it...
