This problem will challenge the best. When powering up a Dell Dimension 4500S, the PC boots to the point of the Dell logo. The progress line below the logo advances to what appears to be completion - and then the boot process stops. If I then press Cntl-Alt-Delete, the boot up process restarts at the beginning. It then stops at the same place. If I perform this process 3 times, the PC then presents an "Alert" message indicating that the previous attempts at booting failed at checkpoint [HDsk]. If I wait about a minute the system then states "Primary harddisk drive 1 not found, Secondary harddisk drive 1 not found. Strike F1 Key to continue or F2 to run setup" If I press F1, the system proceeds into a normal Windows XP bootup. Note that I am unable to process a Safe Mode boot. Attempts at doing so result in a "keyboard error". |

Eventually the PC may not boot up at all. Your hard drive, mainboard IDE controller, and power supply might be failing. CNTL ALT DEL sends a soft reset to the system (3 times indicates a power voltage issue) HDSK boot fail harddisk drive not found indicates a failing drive or drive controller (mainboard). The keyboard error is I/O related and may just be a timing issue. |

I installed a new 430 watt psu and my fan sped up very much. It turns out to be an expensive lesson learned. In that short overamped time (one minute or so) I lost my hardisc or motherboard. Bummer. |
