What mainboard do you have David?
The chipset on the mainboard is very important to know in this case.

Logical/Chipset 1 Memory Banks
Bank 0 : 512MB DDR-SDRAM 2.5-3-3-7 1CMD
Bank 1 : 512MB DDR-SDRAM 2.5-3-3-7 1CMD
Bank 2 : 256MB DDR-SDRAM 2.5-3-3-7 1CMD
Bank 3 : 256MB DDR-SDRAM 2.5-3-3-7 1CMD
This tells me the 512 sticks are probably what is causing the issue. Do the 512 sticks have memory on one side of the stick or on both sides?
sounds to me like ECS implement of the Nforce4 and AMI bios can not allow windows to access all the addressable lines set forth by the use of the 2 512m sticks plus the gig stick. SiSoft Sandra can access the memory via the SPD.
If you can, try just using another 1 gig stick.
As to windows it appears to be 2X512's and 2X256's

i`ve kinda fixed it now by building a second pc and sticking the unused 512 into that (works a treat) so i have 1.5 gigs of ram in my main pc and 512 megs in the second pc :-)
